NLP - The Missing Link
The Magnificent Seven – an NLP Success Story In the autumn of 2001 I was fortunate enough to be able fund my NLP Practitioner Certification with ITS (International Teaching Seminars). I had been aware of the potential benefits of NLP for some time and now, here I was, starting my training. I was disillusioned with The Fitness Industry and looking forward to a career change – I was, at that time, working as a freelance personal trainer, having been based at David Lloyd, Brighton prior to that. Now, as I sat and listened I experienced what we call in NLP one ‘Light Bulb Moment’ after another. I had discovered the Missing Link; having skills in NLP would enable me to work with my clients minds, and not just their bodies. I would be able to help those clients whose beliefs about themselves and what they were capable of got in the way of them achieving their fitness goals. I would be able to help clients to be more confident and break habits. My enthusiasm was renewed Interestingly, a little research revealed that in fact some of the best known names in Fitness, not coincidentally, had already discovered NLP and were using it successfully. But many more had not, and this is where I could see a role for myself. Why not share this stuff out and benefit the maximum number of clients? My vision was to train other Fitness Professionals . ‘Dare to Dream’ was the motto of ITS, and I did just that. Two years on, two years during which my feet have hardly touched the floor, that dream is reality. There can be no greater advertisement for the potential NLP has to change people’s lives; it has changed mine, both personally and professionally, my students’ and their clients’. With my own Trainers Training completed, our first group of students, ‘The Magnificent Seven’, have qualified as NLP Practitioners, and to complete the happy ending, their final module took place in the business’ new premises - a fantastic barn conversion in Badbury, Wiltshire (near Swindon). Certainly Fitness Unlimited has come along way since myself and Julia Bishop ran the UK ( and World’s) first NLP Training for Fitness Professionals in February 2003. The business has been recognised as the market leader and, as founder of the business, I have become something of a spokes person for NLP within the Fitness Industry. Consequently I feel a certain responsibility when it comes to setting standards, particularly as other training companies follow our lead. If you want to use NLP with your clients my advise would be as follows; check out the qualifications of the person delivering the course. It is essential that they are a qualified NLP Trainer recognised by the ANLP ( Assosciation of Neuro Linguistic Programming). It is only at trainer level that we are examined in NLP content and are taught how to teach people to use NLP with other people. This is what distinguishes an NLP Trainer from a Master Practitioner; a Master Practitioner can only deliver workshops intended for Personal Development . In other words if you were to attend one of these short courses you would not be able to use any of the techniques with clients. It’s the difference between being able to teach someone to clean and jerk and knowing how to teach a personal trainer how to teach their clients to clean and jerk. Being able to train is a skill. Make sure your ‘trainer’ has it. Check out too the course content; some 2 Day workshops teach advanced therapeutic Masters’ level techniques normally taught after 30+ days of NLP Training; this can be likened to teaching personal trainers how to work with elite athletes without them understanding any of the basics. At best this is unwise; at it’s worst it’s downright dangerous. It’s a short cut that sells courses, but it’s one full of risk for anybody on the receiving end. Fitness Unlimited do offer a 3 day Introductory Training in NLP, taught by qualified NLP Trainers, but we actively encourage students to complete the full 15 Day NLP Practitioner Certification. The majority of our students opt to continue; they want a thorough grounding in the subject and the piece of paper to prove it. They also recognise the importance of being able to properly insure themselves. Meanwhile we are talking to the various governing bodies about aligning the 3 Day course with NVQ and various CPD schemes-more groun breaking stuff so watch this space. In the meantime by all means, read and learn as much as you can, attend workshops and use NLP to develop your own lives, but remember, if you want to practice ( that is, use NLP with your clients) the only route open to you is to complete a Practitioner Certification. So what exactly is NLP? NLP is about how we learn everything, from excellent performance to bad habits. It helps people understand, at a practical level, how they and others make sense of the world. It enables people to detect their own learned patterns of thought and behaviour, and where desirable it has the tools to change, or reprogramme, negative patterns with more positive ones. Understanding and using NLP enables people to enhance their confidence and effectiveness in both their personal and professional lives. People become clear about what they want, solve ‘problems’ creatively, use time more effectively and achieve their goals. As such, NLP is used widely and with outstanding results in a diverse range of fields from advertising and marketing, to communications and therapy.
